Although the highly anticipated second season of the HBO hit Big Little Lies won’t be available for streaming until 2019, that won’t stop fans (including us) from speculating over every detail of what’s to come after the dramatic conclusion of season one. The biggest development yet in the news swirling around the show, which was created by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, is the confirmed addition of Meryl Streep to the already-brilliant cast of powerhouse actresses. She will join Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, Witherspoon, and Kidman to take on the role of Mary Louise Wright, Perry Wright’s mother.

Kidman recently hinted at what’s in store for Streep’s character and how they were able to get her on board for the role. “It was written for her and we wanted her,” Kidman told Entertainment Tonight.

According to Vulture, novelist Liane Moriarty admitted to Australia’s Daily Telegraph that she wrote the role specifically for Streep and that the three-time Oscar-winning actress will play the complex role of a mother who loved her son despite his discretions. She also hints at tension between Kidman’s and Streep’s characters, saying, “She had a slightly fraught relationship with her daughter-in-law, so it’s a very complicated, difficult time.”

Though their characters may not get along, Kidman couldn’t be more thrilled to have Streep on board. “We’re determined to give her an extraordinary experience,” Kidman told ET. “She’s had a lot of experiences so we just want to make it fun for her and vibrant and exciting.”

As for convincing Streep to take on the role, Kidman attributes the team’s success to women supporting women. “It really is her standing up and going, ‘I support you as women, and I believe in you,'” she said.

Big Little Lies will return to HBO with all its twists and turns sometime in 2019, and Streep’s role is sure to add some major drama to the already-elaborate plot.
