This Is Exactly What a Productivity Expert's Morning Routine Looks Like

We’ve learned to never underestimate the power of a carefully-curated morning routine. Just look at Tim Ferriss, entrepreneur, investor, and the New York Times bestselling author of The 4-Hour Workweek, who has developed a flawless morning routine over 10 years of trial and error, Business Insider reports. He’s done so by incorporating elements of successful CEOs’ morning routines into his own, after first interviewing them on his podcast The Tim Ferriss Show. Above all, he believes that morning routines should be “strictly followed” in order to “avoid wasting time thinking,” he told BI. “The more constraints I can create where I fly on autopilot and get a result I need or enjoy, the more horsepower, the more calories I have to allocate to being creative, and to doing things where thinking should actually be applied.” Here’s his exact morning routine: 

1. He makes his bed. This advice comes from Hindu priest Dandapani, whom Ferriss met in 2011, who told him to start off his day by making his bed.

2. He meditates for 20 minutes. “Meditation…is really about…decreasing emotional reactivity so you can proactively create your day and create your life; versus, just being a walking reflex that sometimes screws up,” Ferriss said. He likes the Headspace app.

3. He drinks a strong cup of tea. Specifically, he mixes pu-erh aged black tea, green tea, and turmeric and ginger shavings, adds hot water, and lets it steep for one to two minutes. He then adds one to two tablespoons of coconut oil or Quest MCT Oil Powder for a dose of medium-chain triglycerides. This so-called “titanium tea” wakes him up and boosts his metabolism.

4. He journals for five minutes. He reportedly alternates between two different writing exercises called The 5-Minute Journal and Morning Pages to ultimately “be a happier person, to be a more content person.”

5. He eats a small breakfast. Typically half a can of Amy’s organic black bean chili, which is a low-fat variety that’s high in protein and fiber.

6. He exercises for 20 to 90 minutes. “That exercise could be riding on a Peloton bike and doing a 20-minute HIIT workout [high-intensity interval training], or it could be acroyoga, or it could be weight training or working on a Concept 2 rower,” he told BI.
